The mantelet was an outer garment similar to a cape or mantle, but smaller and shorter. It could be highly decorated and worn for evening, be made of sturdy wool with a fur collar for winter, or be made of simple lightweight fabric and used as a windy spring day wrap. Though first worn in the late 1700's, the mantelet was most popular during the late 1830's and 1840's; but it was such a convenient wrap that it still showed up in fashion journals in the late 1860's.
